Marina Bay Singapore

Marina Bay Singapore is always vibrant. It is also, for a photographer, almost too easy. Marina Bay Sands with its ship balanced on three towers, the ArtScience Museum opening like a lotus beside it, the Helix Bridge, the financial district stacked up across the water — everything is lit, everything is reflected, and the promenade around the bay has been laid out so that you can’t really get it wrong. The trick is finding something that isn’t the postcard, and on this particular night I didn’t try very hard.

These are from across the bay after dark, with the shutter open long enough to smooth the water and let the light show do its work. Singapore’s humidity means the lens fogs the moment you step out of anywhere air-conditioned, so the first ten minutes of any night shoot here are spent standing around waiting for the glass to catch up with the weather.

If you go: the hour after sunset is the one that matters, and the light show on the bay runs a couple of times a night. Walk the full loop — Merlion, Esplanade, Helix Bridge, back along the Sands promenade — and you’ll have every angle in about ninety minutes, plus a reasonable excuse for a drink at the end of it.
