Jambi, South Sumatra at night

A night street walk through the centre of Jambi, a city on the Batanghari River in central Sumatra, Indonesia. After dark the streets come alive in a different way — food stalls under fluorescent light, songbird cages hanging outside shopfronts, and traders packing up for the night.

These were shot handheld on the Sony A7Rii with the 55mm. Night lighting in Jambi is a mix of fluorescent shopfronts and sodium street lamps, which makes for strong colour contrasts.

Jambi doesn’t see many tourists, which makes it a relaxed place to photograph — people are curious rather than wary. If you’re in town, the riverfront near the Gentala Arasy Bridge is worth an evening walk as well.
