Crowded fabric shops and busy side streets — Mayestik, South Jakarta.

Pasar Mayestik is one of Jakarta’s best-known textile markets: floors of fabric, buttons, lace and tailors, surrounded by a maze of side streets selling everything else. The street life is as interesting as the market itself — porters carrying bolts of cloth, food carts working the crowds, shopkeepers spilling stock onto the pavement.

For street photography it makes a good half-day walk. The covered sections are dim, but the side streets are open and busy from mid-morning, and people are generally happy to be photographed.
